A Paradigm for Understanding the Catholic Church in China: Is Matteo Ricci, SJ still a model?

Fr. Robert E. Carbonneau, CP will offer a presentation entitled: "A Paradigm for Understanding the Catholic Church in China on the Catholic Church in China and address the question "Is Matteo Ricci, SJ Still a Model?" Dr. Thomas Cattoi, Associate Professor of Christology and Cultures at the Jesuit School of Theology will offer a response.

Fr. Robert has been Executive Director of the US Catholic China Bureau in Berkeley, CA since November 1, 2014. Ordained a Passionist priest in 1978, he is a member of St. Paul of the Cross Province (Eastern US). He received his PhD in American and East Asian History from Georgetown University. He has taught US, Chinese, Japanese, World History, and Catholic mission history in various universities and graduate schools in the United States. From 2007-2008 he taught in Chongqing, China. His research and publications concentrate on Passionist history especially in West Hunan, China and the overall relationship of twentieth-century American Catholic missionaries to United States Department of State, the Holy See and the Chinese government. From 2012 to 2015 the Passionists and Ricci Institute, University of San Francisco digitized the twentieth-century Passionist China Collection. As the Archival Specialist Fr. Robert participated in identifying some 8,000 photos and 60,000 documents from West Hunan. He continues to be a Special Affiliate Archival Specialist at the Ricci Institute and historian for the Passionist Congregation in the Eastern United States.
